Breeding Stock for Estate Herds

White Fallow Deer

Elegant and striking with pure white coats, White Fallow deer are calm, adaptable, and well-suited to parkland herds, prized for both their beauty and balanced temperament.

Red Deer

Britain’s largest native species, known for their impressive stature, strong genetics, and excellent venison quality, ideal for producing robust, high-performance stock.

Sika Deer

Compact and hardy with rich dark coats, Sika are alert, resilient animals that thrive in varied environments, are pretty little 'lawnmowers' that bring valuable beauty to managed herds.

Père David Deer

A rare and ancient species once extinct in the wild, distinguished by its tall stature, distinctive antlers, and gentle nature, treasured for its conservation value and genetic purity.

Making a Significant Contribution to The Estate's Ecology

Deer have been recorded at Houghton since the early 18th Century. They are highly functional and valued contributors to the Estate ecology – referred to playfully as “ornamental lawnmowers” because their grazing helps maintain the park’s vegetation structure.

Today, there are over 1,000 deer on the Houghton Estate. All are EID ear tagged and annually brought through the bespoke, state-of-the-art handling shed, where tags are read, health checks carried out, and weights recorded. This aids the management of highly successful selective breeding.

Houghton Deer

  • The White Fallow deer at Houghton are its signature — often mistaken for albinos, but in fact part of the natural colour range of fallow deer.

  • Houghton hosts the largest herd of white fallow deer in the UK, originally developed under the 5th Marquess of Cholmondeley in the late 19th century.

  • The estate doesn’t rely on exotic imports alone — alongside the white fallow herd, Houghton also maintains Red deer, Japanese Sika deer, and a select herd of Père David deer (a rare species originally from China).

  • Through careful game and conservation management, the deer at Houghton form part of a sustainable, diversified estate model, integrating habitat, agriculture, and wildlife.

  • Their presence has a cultural and aesthetic dimension: the ghostly white forms moving through Norfolk parkland are evocative and photogenic, seamlessly blending nature, landscape, and heritage.

  • The deer also serve an educational and touristic role: the estate runs Deer Park Tours (led by the Head Gamekeeper) to show visitors the different species and share insights into deer biology, heritage, and management practices.

Specialised Handling & Live Deer Transportation

Safe, Stress-Free and Professional Delivery Across the UK and Europe

image00008.jpg

At Houghton Deer Park & Farm, every animal is handled with the same care and respect it receives at home. When our deer are transferred to new estates, we arrange transport through trusted, specialist handlers who understand their nature and the importance of calm, low-stress movement.

Our purpose-built livestock vehicles are designed specifically for deer, with smooth interiors, non-slip floors, and excellent ventilation to ensure comfort throughout the journey. Each load is carefully planned and monitored — routes are chosen to minimise travel time, and trained staff accompany the deer at every stage.

Before departure, all animals are health-checked, tagged, and travel with full veterinary and movement certification. Vehicles are cleaned and disinfected between journeys to maintain the highest biosecurity standards.

On arrival, the deer are quietly released into holding paddocks or soft-release pens so they can settle before joining their new herd. Whether travelling across Norfolk or to estates further afield, our commitment remains the same: the welfare of the animals always comes first.
